Taking the first step towards therapy can be a little nerve-wracking, especially when you’re not quite sure what to expect. And when it’s your first time seeing a psychologist online, it’s totally normal to have questions.

At Human First, we understand how important it is to feel supported and comfortable right from the beginning. Whether you’re seeking help for anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, or just need someone to talk to, our online psychology clinic makes it easier than ever to access therapy, no matter where you live in Australia.

Here’s a down-to-earth guide to what you can expect at your very first appointment with an online psychologist.

Booking Your Intake Appointment

The whole process is designed to be simple and stress-free. You can book your session online at a time that suits you—no need to call or wait on hold. You don’t need a referral to get started, but if you’d like to claim a Medicare rebate, you’ll need to organise a Mental Health Treatment Plan with your GP beforehand.

Once your first appointment is confirmed, you’ll receive a welcome email with all the info you need, including a secure link to access your online session, intake & privacy forms. There’s no need to download anything, the forms can be completed online & when it is time for your first online psychology session, just click the link and join.

Before the Session: Intake Form & Privacy Info

Before your appointment, you’ll automatically be sent some forms to fill out. These forms give you the chance to tell us about yourself, your background, what you’re currently experiencing, and what kind of support you’re looking for.

We recommend you complete the form before the session, this will allow your psychologist to read through it ahead of time so they can come into the session already understanding your needs. This can make the first appointment feel more focused and tailored to you.

If you don’t get a chance to fill out the forms, that’s ok, your psychologist will go through the intake questions with you during the session and also explain our privacy policy, so you feel informed and in control of how your information is used and protected. Please note if you choose to go down this path the time spent going through the intake and privacy forms will be part of your session and there will be no additional time allocated to the session.

What Happens in the First Appointment?

Think of your first session as a gentle conversation. There’s no pressure to “have it all together” or explain everything perfectly. This is your space, and we go at your pace.

Here’s what typically happens in an intake session:

  • We’ll talk about what brought you to therapy and what you’d like to work on
  • Your psychologist might ask a few questions to understand your mental health history
  • You’ll have the chance to ask any questions about the therapy process
  • Together, you’ll chat about your goals and what future sessions might look like

Most importantly, it’s a time to build a connection with your psychologist. Therapy works best when there’s trust and mutual understanding, and this session lays the foundation for that.

Do I Need to Prepare Anything?

You don’t need to prepare anything formal, but a few small things can help:

  • Find a quiet, private space where you feel safe and won’t be interrupted
  • Use headphones if you can—it makes the sound clearer and more private
  • Have a glass of water or a cup of tea nearby (comfort is key!)
  • Jot down any questions or topics you’d like to bring up

And remember, it’s totally okay to feel nervous. Your psychologist gets it, they’re here to support you, not judge you.

Is Online Therapy Really Effective?

Absolutely. Research shows that online therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions for most mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, PTSD, and more. Many people actually find it easier to open up from the comfort of their own home.

At Human First, we are supporting clients all across Australia, from big cities to small rural towns. Our online format helps remove barriers like travel, childcare, or work schedules, making it easier to get the help you need, when you need it.
